Joker 2 Confirmed with Lady Gaga in Talks to Play Harley Quinn
Joker, featuring the titular Clown Prince of Crime is coming back for another solo movie. The sequel of Joker (2019) is titled Joker 2: Folie à Deux and will see director Todd Phillips at the helm once again. If that wasn’t interesting enough, Lady Gaga is in talks to play Harley Quinn, Joker’s partner in crime in the upcoming sequel.
The subtitle, Folie à Deux, refers to a shared delusional disorder. While many speculated that this referred to Batman, it’s now very likely that this refers to Harley Quinn instead. Director Todd Philips shared a picture on Instagram announcing the sequel.
Joker 2 will be a musical, which is an odd but interesting choice from director Todd Phillips. Making the Joker sequel a musical is a surprising choice as we have never seen a superhero or (villain) movie as a musical.
If Joker 2 is going in a musical direction, Lady Gaga will be a fine choice to lead the cast. After all, Gaga has more than proved her acting capabilities with her acclaimed performances in A Star is Born and House of Gucci. On a side note, Todd Phillips served as producer for A Star is Born (2018), which saw Lady Gaga completely exhibiting her dynamic musical range.
As per the report, Gaga will play a very different version of Harley Quinn from the current DC incarnation by Margot Robbie who was last seen portraying the character in The Suicide Squad (2021).
If you were expecting Joker 2 to feature Batman, we wouldn’t hold our breaths on that. As per Philip’s previous comments, Robert Pattinson’s Batman will not be part of the Joker films. This makes ample sense since the Bruce Wayne introduced in Joker is still a kid.
Joker (2019) despite polarizing film critics was a massive success. The film earned more than $1 billion at the box office and became the first R-rated movie to cross the billion-dollar mark. The film received 11 Oscar nominations out of which it bagged two including Joaquin Phoenix winning best actor.
Considering that the film was just announced, we have a long way to go before we can catch Joker 2 in theatres.
