Charlie Cox’s Daredevil returns for Spiderman 3

Charlie Cox is reportedly rumoured to be reprising his role as Daredevil in Spiderman 3. The news was first reported by Murphy’s Multiverse, who claimed that the casting was confirmed from several trusted sources. It seems that every week adds in another crazy news to the Spiderman: Far From Home sequel.

The involvement of the new superhero lawyer isn’t completely out of the blue. The post-credit scene of Spiderman: Far From Home revealed that Mysterio had exposed the identity of Spiderman – Peter Parker to the world. The illusionist villain also claimed that Peter Parker was responsible for his death.

Charlie Cox as Daredevil

Charlie Cox played Matt Murdock, a blind lawyer by day and a crime-fighting vigilante at night known as the Daredevil. In an interview with ComicBook in April, Charlie Cox denied being part of Spiderman 3. “I hadn’t heard those rumours, but it’s certainly not with my Daredevil. I’m not involved in it. If that’s true, it’s not with me. It’s with another actor.”

Daredevil, the Marvel superhero first premiered on Netflix on April 2015 under the same name. Despite having a successful three-season run on the streaming platform, Daredevil among other Marvel shows was cancelled. According to the original deal between Marvel and Netflix, the former was prohibited to use Dareveil for at least two years since its cancellation.

Since the exclusive rights of Daredevil owned by Netlfix expired in November, the character can now be used in Marvel properties. Spiderman 3 would be a great way to bring the ‘man without fear’ but this time on the big screen.

Since Peter is being framed for murder, it would make sense to hire a lawyer to fight his case. And who better than our very own Matt Murdock to take up his case. Fans initially speculated that Jennifer Walters/ She-Hulk will be Peter’s lawyer, considering she will be starring in her show She-Hulk on Disney Plus. However, the news of Cox returning has been met with great response from fans, so it would make sense for Marvel to go this route.

Daredevil fans were left disappointed after the big Disney Investor Day 2020 failed to announce the revival of the series.

Spiderman 3 Cast Update

Earlier reports also suggest that previous villains of the Spiderman franchises will be returning for the film. Jamie Foxx who played Electro in The Amazing Spiderman 2 had confirmed his involvement in the movie in a since-deleted Instagram post. Alfred Molina is also rumoured to reprise his role of Doctor Octopus from Sam Raimi’s Spiderman 2.

Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire are also said to be in talks with Marvel/ Sony to don the web-slinger suit once again. If this wasn’t good enough, Kirsten Dunst might also reprise her character as Mary Jane Watson. As an icing on the cake, fans might also see Emma Stone play Gwen Stacy from The Amazing Spiderman series.

However, you should take these rumours with a grain of salt. As of this writing, neither Marvel nor Sony have given any official confirmation regarding these casting news.

The Jon Watts directed Spiderman sequel will see Tom Holland as the friendly neighbourhood Spiderman. Joining him will be Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), who could be the key to the multiversal mayhem this movie might bring.

The movie promises to be the biggest and the most ambitious crossover event in history. If these rumours turn out to be true, we could have an Avengers: Endgame like moment early on in phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It seems that we might be heading for Spiderverse event sooner than we thought.

The yet to be titled Spiderman 3 film is scheduled for a release on December 17, 2021.
