The much-awaited trailer for Godzilla vs Kong has finally dropped and netizens are already placing their bets on who will emerge victorious between the two title characters.
The film will release in theatres on March 31st, with the same date release on HBO Max, keeping true to Warner Bros’ statement of releasing every 2021 blockbuster on the streaming platform. The movie will be available to HBO subscribers free of cost for one month since its release date.
The original release date for the film was 25 March but was pushed back five days. Reports suggest that this move was made to make space for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which is releasing in early March.
Godzilla vs Kong is the fourth instalment in Legendary Entertainment’s Monster Verse featuring Godzilla and Kong. The Warner Bros produced shared fictional universe kicked off with Godzilla (2014), followed by Kong: Skull Island (2017) and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019).
This is however not the first time we will see Godzilla and Kong duke it out on the big screen. Their first bout occurred in King Kong vs. Godzilla (1962). Where Kong was declared the winner despite the somewhat ambiguous ending.
The battle between Godzilla and Kong will certainly make for some great cinematic shots and is a child’s fantasy fight played out on a big screen.
The trailer and official plot for the movie point out that Godzilla is on a rampage against humanity. Which is quite contrary to the ending of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, where we saw the Kaiju become an ally for the humans against King Ghidorah.
The 2.24-minute trailer doesn’t explain what caused Godzilla to turn against humanity, but it likely has to do with some human meddling. Kong is then summoned to put an end to Godzilla’s madness, which made for some superb visuals in the trailer.
Fans have already theorised that the rampaging Godzilla might be Mechagodzilla or at least have something to do with the Kaiju’s mechanical doppelganger. The answer to which we’ll only get on 31st March.
Perhaps the movie will have bigger implications than just the main event. At one point in the trailer, Rebecca Hall’s character states ‘The myths are real. There was a war and Godzilla and Kong are the last ones standing.” This could mean that the movie might also shine a light on other titans that once roamed the earth.
The Adam Wingard directed movie will be soundtracked by Tom Holkenborg, who will also provide the music for the upcoming Zack Snyder’s Justice League.
The film will see the return of several characters from the previous films in the Monster Verse, particularly from Godzilla: King of the Monsters. Kyle Chandler, Millie Bobby Brown, and Zhang Ziyi will reprise their roles as Mark Russell, Madison Russell, and Dr Chen, respectively. Alexander Skarsgård will play the protagonist as geologist Nathan Lind. Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry will also be a part of the film.
Godzilla vs Kong is the first film of 2021 that has created so much hype among moviegoers. After a dull 2020 for the film industry, the battle of the ages might just be the start that we deserve.
