Mortal Kombat trailer promises no holds barred violence
Mortal Kombat has dropped its first trailer which staying true to the video games – promises to indulge in extreme violence. The rebooted live-action movie has been slated for a release on 16 April 2021. Warner Bros. released two trailers for the film, with the red band version containing more gore and dismemberments. The extreme blood and violence of the trailer make one thing clear – this movie is not for the faint of heart.
The film stars Lewis Tan (Marvel’s Ironfist), as MMA fighter Cole Young who has the Mortal Kombat dragon logo on his chest as a birthmark. This means that he is chosen to participate in the legendary ‘Mortal Kombat’ tournament – with the fate of Earth in his hands.
The trailer provided us with the movie looks of several classic Mortal Kombat characters such as Raiden, Kano, Sonya, Liu Kang and Goro. Even supernatural warriors Sub-Zero and Scorpion were seen duking it out at the end of the trailer.
Like every 2021 Warner Bros. blockbuster, the movie will be released simultaneously in theatres and on HBO Max. It will be available to the subscribers of the streaming platform at no extra cost.
The film is a reboot of the Mortal Kombat film franchise as the 1997 Mortal Kombat: Annihilation was a complete disaster at the box office.
Mortal Kombat (2021) is based on a popular video game franchise of the same name. The game is well known for its brutal fights and ‘fatality’, which became a common word in pop culture. It was released in arcades in 1992 and has gone through several variants in gaming consoles. It’s most recent instalment ‘Mortal Kombat 11’ debuted in 2019.
Video game adaption movies haven’t faired so well in the past, but perhaps, this movie can break the jinx. Director McQuoid has also stayed true to his promise to adapt blood finishing fatality moves from the video game to the film.
The martial arts fantasy film will be directed by Simon McQuoid and produced by James Wan. The screenplay is provided by David Callaham, who is also currently working on the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel. Mortal Kombat was shot in South Australia.
