Tom Cruise Returns to Action in Top Gun: Maverick
The latest trailer for Top Gun: Maverick, the highly awaited sequel to the 1986 Cold War thriller that catapulted Tom Cruise to stardom, has just been released. Cruise’s Maverick, now a high-flying test pilot and instructor, returns in this aviation action thriller. Top Gun: Maverick is scheduled to be released on May 27, 2022
Top Gun, the military action picture starring Tom Cruise and Jennifer Connelly, was released to worldwide acclaim 36 years ago. Tom Cruise, who plays Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, is exactly where he belongs as a test pilot, pushing the boundaries but avoiding the advancement in rank that would put him in jeopardy.
The enormous two-seater F-14 “Tom Cats” maritime fighter jet used by the US Air Force was featured in the first Top Gun film, released in 1986. The F/A-18 Super Hornets appear to have replaced the F-14 Tom Cats in the 2022 film’s trailer.
Returning as Iceman is Val Kilmer, while newcomer Miles Teller plays Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of Maverick’s late friend, Nick Bradshaw (“Goose,” played in Top Gun by Anthony Edwards). Maverick is forced to confront his unstable history, as well as his “deepest fears,” with the introduction of Rooster, according to the official synopsis for the film:
The trailer itself provides us with a decent idea of the high level of action on display, as well as the tensions between Maverick and Rooster, and a strong hint that the pilots, both new and experienced, will be flying into some very real, very chaotic fighting.
Top Gun: Maverick will see the return of several old and new faces including Jennifer Connelly, Lewis Pullman, Charles Parnell, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, Bashir Salahuddin, Jay EllisDanny Ramirez and Monica Barbaro.
